Azores: World’s Greenest Tourist Hotspot!

Azores: World’s Greenest Tourist Hotspot!

The Azores, Cascais, Lagos, the Zona Oeste/Socorro and Archeira in Torres Vedras, and Sintra have been ranked among the 100 most sustainable destinations in the world in which to holiday, by website Green Destinations.

The list of the 100 greenest destinations in which to go on vacation was published by website and, its CEO Albert Salman said in a statement, the objective is to “acknowledge the tourist destinations that take sustainability seriously and endeavour to make a difference.”

Admitting that “measuring sustainability is not simple nor is black and white”, Salman elaborated: “This list recognises the destinations that are on track, taking into account independent expert reviews using objective criteria.”
As well as having six destinations among the top 100, Portugal’s chosen hotspots also achieved some of the highest Global Sustainable Tourism ratings in Europe.

The Azores Islands were considered Europe’s most sustainable tourist destination, with a rating of 8.9 out of ten, while Cascais and Lagos notched up a score of eight points out of ten.

According to the organisers, the rating is calculated using between 40 and 60 different indicators, such as Nature, environmental quality and care, cultural heritage, social issues, green energy and green tourism policies.

Green Destinations said: “The Sustainable Destinations Global TOP100 is created to celebrate the management efforts of the world’s most sustainable tourist destinations. The list is the result of open calls in the social media, followed by a selection process involving 30 international experts.”

The report is the result of work by four different sustainable tourism organisations:, Vision on Sustainable Tourism, Totem Tourism and Green Destinations.
