The Portuguese government has announced a new reduction in the Personal Income Tax (IRS), the effects of which taxpayers are expected to begin feeling as early as November. The measure will be retroactive to January 2026 and represents another step in the strategy to reduce the tax burden on household income.

According to the information provided, this reduction is expected to cover taxpayers with incomes falling within the first six IRS brackets, benefiting more than two million households in Portugal.

The measure represents an estimated budgetary impact of approximately 400 million euros. In practice, the goal is to increase households’ net disposable income by reducing the amount of tax withheld from their earnings.

Although the reduction takes effect at the beginning of 2026, taxpayers are expected to begin feeling its impact as early as November. Adjustments for previous months will be made through the withholding tax tables, allowing taxpayers to receive part of the tax benefit in advance—a benefit that would otherwise only be felt later.

This change will also affect the Christmas bonus, meaning that many workers may receive a higher net amount at the end of the year. The application of the new tables will thus allow a portion of the tax relief corresponding to the entire year to be concentrated in the final months of 2026.

The specific amounts of the reduction applicable to each tax bracket have not yet been announced. The government is expected to present the details of the measure after it is approved, including the new tax rates and withholding tables.

This initiative comes at a time when the cost of living and purchasing power continue to be of particular importance to Portuguese families. The income tax reduction is intended to help ease the tax burden and boost disposable income, with direct effects on household budgets.

With the measure scheduled to take effect in November, the coming months should bring further details on its implementation and the specific impact it will have on different income levels.
