Portugal once again received an important signal of international confidence. The financial rating agency Fitch raised the rating of Portuguese sovereign debt from A to A+, placing the country at its best level in the last 15 years.

The decision reflects the positive evolution of Portuguese public finances, with emphasis on the reduction of public debt, fiscal performance and the country's ability to maintain current account surpluses. According to Fitch's projections, public debt is expected to decrease from 89.7% of GDP in 2025 to 87% in 2026, and may reach 82.9% in 2028.

Portugal gains strength with international investors

The improvement in the rating represents another indicator of growing confidence in the Portuguese economy. A higher credit rating is generally associated with a perception of lower financial risk and can contribute to more favourable financing conditions and greater market confidence.

This recognition comes after Portugal was highlighted by The Economist as the best-performing economy among a group of 36 economies analysed in 2025, taking into account indicators such as economic growth, inflation, employment and stock market performance.

The combination of these indicators reinforces Portugal's position as a destination to consider for international investors looking for stability, security and long-term investment opportunities.

Golden Visa keeps Portugal on the international radar

This economic context also gains relevance for the Golden Visa program, which continues to attract international investors interested in obtaining residency in Portugal through eligible investment modalities.

Since the changes introduced in 2023, the direct acquisition of real estate is no longer an eligible route to obtain the Golden Visa. Currently, the program includes alternatives such as investment in certain funds, support for scientific research, contributions to cultural activities and modalities related to the creation of companies and employment.

Although the rating upgrade does not change the criteria or values required to access the program, it contributes to reinforcing the perception of Portugal as an economically sound market with favorable prospects.

A positive sign for Portugal's image

The improvement in Fitch's assessment adds a new argument to Portugal's international projection. In addition to the quality of life, climate and strategic location, the country continues to benefit from economic indicators that strengthen its image with investors and international residents.

In a context where security and stability are increasingly important in investment decisions, the evolution of the Portuguese rating represents another positive sign for confidence in the country and its ability to continue to attract international investment.
