Portugal is preparing to host FIFA World Cup matches for the first time, alongside Spain and Morocco. The event represents a unique opportunity to increase the country’s international visibility and strengthen its position as a destination for tourism, business, and investment.

According to a PwC study commissioned by the Portuguese Football Federation, the World Cup could generate an estimated impact of between 700 and 900 million euros on Portugal’s GDP, between 312 and 394 million euros in tax revenue, and contribute to the creation of 18,000 to 23,000 jobs.

A Boost for Tourism and Investment

In addition to the impact directly related to soccer, the tournament could help increase Portugal’s visibility among millions of international visitors and spectators. This exposure could benefit sectors such as tourism, hospitality, retail, services, and the real estate market.

The matches in Portugal will be held primarily at three stadiums—Estádio da Luz, Estádio José Alvalade, and Estádio do Dragão—which were originally built for Euro 2004 and are expected to benefit mainly from modernization projects, reducing the need for major construction work.

The Algarve May Also Benefit

Although the official matches in Portugal are concentrated in Lisbon and Porto, the impact of the World Cup could extend to other regions of the country. The Algarve, with its strong tourism offerings, golf courses, international airport, and real estate market geared toward foreign buyers, has characteristics that could benefit from an increase in tourist demand and Portugal’s international visibility.

For the real estate sector, events of this magnitude can represent an opportunity to boost interest among international investors who view Portugal not only as a vacation destination but also as a place to purchase a second home or make an investment.

With 2030 on the horizon, Portugal is thus preparing to host one of the world’s largest sporting events—and the impact could extend far beyond the soccer fields.
